An average of 3 million adults meet the criteria for pathological gambling each year. Another 6-9 million have less significant, but still serious problems with their gambling and are known as problem gamblers. Problems gambling has been called the 'hidden addiction'. Welcome to the real world of addiction, not some form of 'nicely-nicely land' where one hypnotic stroke of 'Puff the Magic Dragon', a comforting arm around the shoulder, and the whispering of sweet nothings in an addict's ear, cause a miraculous transformation, a spiritual awakening, of the desperate addict into a person who enjoys permanent abstinence, and lives a beautiful life forever after. It does not happen like this, as addicts do not live in 'nicely-nicely land'. No way. No how. Anyone, at any time can be healed from any disease by a word or two, however it happens so rarely, that the odds are not very appealing. The addiction problem is growing in the US for many varied reasons at the present time. More political trouble in the world, increased violence from within and without, high amounts of divorce, unemployment, etc. No program guarantees abstinence - whether it is hypnosis , EFT, counseling, biofeedback, shock therapy, in-patient treatment or the appropriate self-help group.
